This is why you would see something like this on the label SAE 5W-30.In a 5W-30 for example, the number before the W describes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the better the oils cold temperature/ cold start performance. The number after the W describes how thick the oil is at the engines normal operating temperature. results for this questionWhat ' s The difference between 5W and 10W oil? What ' s The difference between 5W and 10W oil?The numbers are used to indicate each oils viscosity to make sure that you know what you are purchasing. However, for that, you need to understand what they actually mean.5W is the viscosity of 5W30 oil at cold or low temperatures, half as much as the 10W30 oils 10W viscosity at a low temperature.5W30 vs 10W30 Motor Oil The Difference CarUpgrade results for this questionWhat does 5W-40 mean? What does 5W-40 mean? The two numbers in the 5W-40 indicate the weight or viscosity of the engine oil as tested by SAE.What Does the 5W-40 in Motor Oil Mean? 5w30 is a motor oil which is synthetic and has a viscosity of 5 when in low temperature and 30 when in high temperature which is normally at 100 degrees celsius.10w40 refers to synthetic oils which have a viscosity of 10 when in low temperatures and a viscosity of 40 when in the high temperature of 100 degrees Celsius.Author The News Wheel5w30 vs 10w30 What Oil Companies Don't Tell You -What Do The Numbers Mean? What Is Viscosity?ConclusionMost cars and trucks on the road today use multi-grade oil. Both 5w30 and 10w30 are multi-grade products. This means they are designed to perform at both cold starting temperatures and normal operation temperatures of 210° F without sacrificing performance. The first number in the viscosity grade is the low temperature, winter rating (i.e.5w and 10w).In fact, thats what the W stands for Winter.Multi-grade oilsSee more on hcdmag10w-30 questions 2015+ S550 Mustang Forum (GT,·Our range of vehicle engine oils covers mineral oil, semi synthetic and full synthetic engine oils. The mineral oil comes in multi grade in SAE 20w/50 called Scylla in the Rymax brand, while semi synthetics come in SAE10w/40 called posidon under same brand and 5w/30 5w/40 in full synthetic grades called Syrinx.

May 23,2018·The first number,10W,describes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures. This is a pretty good rating for most peoples use, although in places that have very low temperatures (Rymax People also askWhat does 5W 30 oil do?What does 5W 30 oil do?This means that once the engine reaches normal operating temperature,5W-30 oil will be thicker than 5W-20.Due to the increased resistance of the thicker 5W-30 oil, your engine will produce slightly lower fuel economy and horsepower output. What Happens if You Put in 5W-30 Oil Instead of 5W-20 Some results are removed in response to a notice of local law requirement. For more information, please see here.12345Next

What Happens if You Put in 5W-30 Oil Instead of 5W-20

5W-30 and 5W-20 motor oil both feature the same winter rating. This means that both grades exhibit the same viscosity under cold conditions.However,5W-30 features a slightly higher viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius than does 5W-20.This means that once the engine reaches normal operating temperature,5W-30 oil will be thicker than 5W-20.What does 5W-30 actually mean? - Rymax LubricantsThis is why you would see something like this on the label SAE 5W-30.In a 5W-30 for example, the number before the W describes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the better the oils cold temperature/ cold start performance. The number after the W describes how thick the oil is at the engines normal operating temperature. What does 5W-30 actually mean? - Rymax LubricantsWhat does 5W-30 actually mean? everyday chemistry - Does motor oil get more viscous when

The motor oil in my 2004 Pontiac Vibe is 5W-30.My (incorrect) understanding of this SAE nomenclature is that 5W means Viscosity index of 5 in the winter (or when really cold - like $\pu{-30 ^\circ F}$) and Viscosity index of 30 at operating temperature (or when the car has been running for a little while). So how is this accomplished?
